One attack against the US or its allies will cost Iran much.  Iran has identified at least 35 US targets that could be hit with retaliatory strikes after the country’s president chillingly vowed to exact revenge for the killing of its top general, Qassem Soleimani.  Iranian General Gholamali Abuhamzeh, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards in the southern province of Kerman, offered few specifics as he rattled his saber, naming only American warships in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, as potential targets.

The regime could also potentially attack US troops in Syria, Iraq, Bahrain and elsewhere in the region, along with US embassies or other targets. Cyberattacks are another possibility, an administration official told Time.  Abuhamzeh said vital American targets in the region had been identified “a long time ago”

State Department officials said any retaliation would just be a continuance of the ongoing attacks Soleimani was orchestrating for years in the region, and stressed that the targeted killing of the leader derailed an imminent major attack that is not likely to happen.  Trump has said be has 52 Iranian targets in sight.

"We cannot promise that we have broken the circle of violence,” a senior State Department official said. “What I can say from my experience with Qassem Soleimani is, it is less likely that we will see this now than it was before, and if we do see an increase in violence, it probably will not be as devilishly ingenious.”
