The United States and China have recommended tariff cuts on $60 billion worth of products following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington, D.C.  How does this play out.

The newly formed U.S.-China Board of Trade recommended tariff reductions for comparable lists of products for each country, totaling $30 billion worth of exports for both nations, according to a White House Sunday press release.  “As a direct result of the strong relationship between President Trump and President Xi, the United States and China, under the auspices of the new Board of Trade, have recommended $30 billion of trade in non-sensitive goods on each side that could benefit from more favorable tariff treatment in the future,” said Jamieson Greer, the U.S. trade representative.

Affected Chinese imports into the U.S. include fireworks, curtains, household scales, skeet targets, fish hooks and myriad other items. For American exports to China, the products, which Greer noted account for about 30% of total U.S. exports to the East Asian nation, include livestock, seafood, dairy products, vegetables and more.“From agricultural products to medical devices, President Trump is unlocking improved market access for about 30 percent of U.S. exports to China, while benefiting consumers with imports from China of household goods, toys, and other products that the United States generally does not import from other countries,” Greer stated.
